Icelandic Landslides

 Iceland

With all of the earthquakes that happen in Iceland there is an abundance of landslides. There are also landslides that are caused by water from snow and rain. The landslides cause damage to road and damage to infrastructure. According to an article on the Iceland Review landslides are becoming more common.

The most dangerous form of land slide is a rockslide according to the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. These rockslides last occurred when the Ice Age began to recede. The most common form of landslide would be a rockfall. These rockfalls happen when a bunch of rocks fall off the free face and fall onto a talus slope.

The government of Iceland helps to prevent the amount of collateral damage by installing warning systems. One such warning system is the analysis of earthquakes. Some landslides are caused by earthquakes which would prompt alerts to lookout for possible landslides. Heavy rain can also lead to possible landslides so the residents of Iceland would have be ready in the case of it happening.

  2. Hi Robert, I didn't realize so many places were susceptible to dangerous landslides. This was the case for my country of Greece as well. I feel like when people think of seismic activity they really on group in Earthquakes and Tidal Waves/ Tsunamis. Evidently seismic activity can also be a great indicator of landslide risk. It is important to stay prepared and it is good to see that Iceland does so.

  3. Hi Robert! It's so interesting to learn how much Iceland has to worry about with landslides, especially rock slides. It's good that the government has plans in place to warn people when they are more likely so that individuals can take action to keep themselves safe.
