On the Coast of Iceland

 Iceland

Iceland's coast is rocky and mountainous. The countries volcanos formed the coast by lava falling into the sea creating new land. The newly formed land was sharp and brittle comparable to igneous rock. The coastal hazards stem from the ocean constantly beating on the rocky coast causing erosion. The erosions cause the Icelandic Coast to lose some of its structural integrity means that some parts of the coast can be unstable.

Coastal flooding is also a problem that Iceland faces. According to ThinkHazard Iceland has a 20% chance of potentially damaging floods occurring in the next 10 years. With global warming and the rising of the world's oceans that probability would most likely skyrocket.

  1. Hi Robert,
Nice post for this week! Just like Iceland Turkey has been exposed to severe costal erosion and shoreline recession for the last 30 years. One of the most reasons for this problem is the response of the man-made activities such as sand mining. In recent years world famous Konyaalti Beach in Turkey's Mediterranean resort city of Antalya has lost nearly 10,000 square meters of soil in 2020 due to erosion. One main cuase of this has been because of sand and storms quarries on the Boğaçayı streams, which flows from the Taurus Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea, have changed the sedimentation regime of Konyaalti Beach.

  2. Hi Robert,
I found your post this week very interesting and informative. Much like Iceland, Bahrain also experiences coastal erosion and coastal hazards. Bahrain finds itself off the coast of the Arabian Sea. Moreover, you will find significant damage near the coast of the city due to abnormally large waves.

  3. Hi Robert! Great job on your post this week. I found it very interesting that the coast of Iceland was formed by volcanoes. Sweden is very similar to Iceland because they experience coastal erosion as well. I think a lot of other students will find that in their country this week too, if their country has a coastline. With climate change, the sea level is rising, so I think coastal erosion will be seen more and more with time. Thanks for your informative post this week!
